shares on those registers were not bona notabilia within the jurisdiction of the Hongkong Court. Doubts have been expressed as to the correctness of this judgment but the matter has never been taken to a higher court. I enclose two copies of the judgment in question. I may say that the British authorities in China have disclaimed any right to deal with the "enemy" shares on the Shanghai register.

I have therefore to request Your Lordship's instructions as to the course to be adopted in dealing with these and other enemy shares on the London Register of this Bank and to enquire what answer should be returned to the last paragraph of the Minister's letter. In the meantime I have caused the Minister to be informed that the matter has been referred to you.
